-makes up a step of the intrinsic pathway
-formed via activation of Factor VIII --> this reaction is catalyzed by Factor IIa (thrombin)
-Factor VIIIa (along with calcium (Factor IV), phospholipids, Factors IXa & VIIa) in turn catalyzes the activation of Factor X to Xa
